Armenia

Armenia, the country who has given us Cher and an alphabet that resembles a snake, joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 when Andr brought the country into the top 10. The next year the same success was repeated by the singer Hayko, some native Armenian Indians and a roll of toilet paper.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan enters the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2008, completing the latest addition to the map of Europe, the Caucasus, from which both Armenia and Georgia have previously joined.
The people of Azerbaijan speak a Turkish dialect called Azeri, and the country lists as number 129 in the international democracy index by the Economist, and is the second country listed as an Authoritarian regime to enter the Eurovision Song Contest.

Belarus

This charming dictatorship joined the Eurovision in 2004, and so far had a better success in the Junior contest than the real one. Although their best result in the contest was in 2007 when Koldun ended 6th, their most memorable act is Love Me Tonight in the 2005 semifinal by Angelica Agurbash, a sausage maker's wife who likes to blog, screech and change her songs.

Estonia

Estonia started of their Eurovision carreer with a non-qualification in 1993 and a penultimate place in 1994. After a year of rest in 1995 though, they came back strong with a string of top-10 finishes, culminating in a surprising victory for Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL in 2001.

However after another good showing at home the year after, thing went rapidly downhill. The only Estonians to be spotted in a Eurovision final after 2003 were some spokespersons and four Ninja girls scoring big points .. for Switzerland.

In 2007, Gerli Padar showed us that Eurovision success does not run in the family, and stayed in the semifinal as well.

Georgia

Georgia debuted in 2007 and practiced unprecedented promotion tactics, including a free bottle of wine to every journalist and (according to Maltese delegates) attempts to swap votes under the table. All this (and a handful of emigrants) did not help Sopho do better than 12th in the final.

Latvia

Latvia has always ended either very high or very low, including one victory in 2002 by Marie N. In 8 years they have never finished between 5th and 16th. This tendency was made obvious in 2007 when bonaparti.lv finished very high in the semifinal, but in the bottom ten on the big night.
The Latvian final, Eirodziesma, is known for the creative use of English in many of its entries.

Lithuania

Lithuania is notorious for low records. It is, apart from Portugal, the only country to debut with 0 points (Ovidijus Visniauskas in 1994), and it is the longest participating country from Eastern Europe to have never made it to the top 5. Most notably, Audrone Girkontaite has managed only 22 televotes in their national semifinal of 2004.
Nevertheless, LT United's self-proclaimed victory has gained them a respectable 6th place in Athens, and the last place has occured only once since 1994.

Moldova

Moldova made its debut in 2005, achieving a very good 6th position with Zdob si Zdub and the lovable drum banging granny with their memorable Bunica bate toba. Despite causing concern to organizers by getting lost at the border crossing, the band stormed on stage in time to steal the show, and become arguably the most colorful and authentic performance of the evening. This guaranteed a final spot for ex-O-Zone Arsenium whose Loca sent Moldova back to the semi.
In 2007 Natalia Barbu with her loud voice and very flat belly put Moldova back in the top 10.

Russia

With 9 time zones, Russians in the Roman Abramovich-governed Chukotka Autonomous Okrug would have to wait until 8:00 Sunday morning to watch the contest. This had no negative effect on Russia's success - sending their biggest stars to the contest, combined with a large ex-Soviet neighbour backing (and Israel), secured them many high placings. However, victory never came - their best results were 2nd by both Alsou in 2000 and Dima Bilan in 2006.
Also notable are pseudo-lesbians with a contemporary song that ended 3rd despite lack of vocal abilities or choreography. This happened both in 2003 and 2007.

Ukraine

Ukraine graced the Eurovision scene in 2003 with Hasta La Vista, performed by Oleksandr Ponomaryov. Although many fans feared the song would score well enough to win, the actual vote proved something completely different. However, after that Ukraine has become one of the most successful countries in Eurovision. Most notable was their victory, a year after their debut, when the country sent local cavelady Ruslana to Istanbul with her Wild Dances, and in 2007 when Verka Serduchka put the word Ailulu in the dictionaries around the continent.

Turkey

Turkey entered the contest in 1975 straight to the last place. After some years taking turns with Greece they became regulars in the contest, but their results did not improve much, with the notorious nul points reached by Seyyal Taner and the late Cetin Alp. It took about two decades for Europe to get used to their oriental sound, and once they did - poor results are a thing of the past for Turkey.
Their best result and only victory to date was Everyway that I can by the very excited Sertab Erener in 2003. Most other results this decade were also in the top 10, and with their dear dear friends Azerbaijan joining, things are only looking better for once tragic country.
